Winnipeg Jets Morning Papers | Unlawful Curve Hockey

Note: The Jets are on holiday break until February 9th. We did compile a health update on the trio (DeMelo, Appleton & Gustafsson) who remain on the shelf which you can read here.

Note II: The Moose were in Rockford last night where they tied the game on a Daniel Torgersson goal, took the lead with a Ville Heinola shorthanded marker but ultimately lost a tough one in a shootout.  Today they are an hour and a half northeast in Milwaukee where they will have a few days of practice ahead of the final two games before the All-Star break against the Admirals.

Note III: The first place Ice are in action tonight as they take on the fourth place Blades here in Winnipeg for a single home game before they head back out on the road for a pair of games in Brandon and Saskatoon. Puck drop at Wayne Fleming Arena is at 7:05 PM CST.

Note IV: If you’d like the chance to be in seats at an NHL game of your choosing then be sure you enter the Illegal Curve Contest courtesy of our friends at Beyway Canada. Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Morrissey born to lead. (Paywall). He is a natural leader, respected by his teammates, can handle media in tough situations and is committed to the city until at least the 2027-28 season (which is longer than anyone else on the team).

Sportsnet: 32 Thoughts. Nothing too exciting in here about the Jets. In thought 5 he mentions Morrissey and being named next captain and in thought 28 he spoke about Connor Hellebuyck and who he doesn’t like around his crease.

Sportsnet: Scout’s Analysis: How the Winnipeg Jets should approach trade deadline. An interesting read with an assessment of the current Jets team and some players that could be of interest (and what a potential trade might involve).

Winnipeg Sun: Josh Morrissey leading Jets on and off the ice. Folks will be talking about that Morrissey goal celebration for the rest of this season and beyond. For a mild mannered guy like him it was quite the reaction, which as we discussed after the game was defining for both his team and the fans.

The Athletic Winnipeg: Jets’ Josh Morrissey is showing why he’s captain material. (Paywall). While I personally was of the opinion that 44 should be the next captain of this team prior to this season starting, the fortunate part for the Jets is they have a number of players who could step up and wear the ‘C’. Murat details why Morrissey would be a good choice for the third captain of the Jets 2.0.

Jets video:

The Chris Johnston Show: Could the Jets make a big splash on or before the trade deadline? Chris Johnston and Julian McKenzie were chatting on the CJ Show and answering fans questions.

Jets prospect news:

Daily Faceoff:  Winnipeg Jets’ Chaz Lucius making the WHL look silly. It is exactly the sort of boost a 19 year old kid without a lot of hockey under his belt the last few years due to injury, needed.
