Winnipeg Free Press photographer Mikaela MacKenzie is a double honouree in the News Photographers Association of Canadas pictures of the year competition for 2021.
MacKenzie won in the personality category for her portrait of longtime Winnipeg pigeon racer Bill Voulgaris. She finished second in the photo story (feature) category for her work chronicling the return to the wild of orphaned black bear cubs, which was part of a three-part series that documented the behind-the-scenes efforts of Black Bear Rescue Manitoba.
In addition, Free Press investigative reporter Ryan Thorpe was part of the CBC podcast team that won the Canadian Association of Journalists award for best online media last weekend. The six-part podcast White Hot Hate examined the rise of white supremacist accelerationism globally, beginning with Thorpes undercover efforts to expose a Canadian Armed Forces reservist who was recruiting for a local neo-Nazi cell.
Im delighted that our photojournalism and our investigative efforts are again earning national recognition, Free Press editor Paul Samyn said. Mikaela and Ryan are among the best young journalists in the country and I am so proud of the way they deliver for those who put their trust in the Free Press.
