Two Winnipeg chefs are hoping to break a world record on Saturday night by serving dinner to 1,200 guests in an outdoor pop-up culinary experience.
Table For 1,200 will bring a prairie-themed meal to people at a big 365-metre-long table somewhere in downtown Winnipeg, in what organizers are calling a fusion of architecture, design and culinary arts.
Cooking the massive meal are Ben Kramer, the executive chef at Diversity Foods at the University of Winnipeg, and Mandel Hitzer, chef and owner of Deer + Almond restaurant.
“It’s going to be the largest table built end-to-end, serving 1200 people, in the world,” the chiefs said.
The chefs have a lot of food to prepare, but both said they are not intimidated by the huge number of guests.
“We got 15,000 people on campus on any given time during the school year, so we are used to doing big volume. And it’s just organization and logistics, really,” Kramer said.
“Yeah, it’s like a giant wedding,” Hitzer added.
Tickets for the event are sold out.
All the guests are being asked to dress in white to represent a “Winnipeg White-Out.”
None of the guests or servers will know the exact location of the 1,200-seat dinner table until about 6 p.m., just one hour before the sit-down dinner is set to begin.
The event is an initiative of StorefrontMB and 5468796 Architecture, in conjunction with the Architectural Fringe Festival.
