The Winnipeg Jets had a big interest in last night’s game seven of the Eastern Conference semifinal series between the New York Rangers and Carolina Hurricanes.
The reason why the Jets were so heavily invested in this Stanley Cup playoff series is because of the Andrew Copp trade that sent Copp to the Rangers on trade deadline day.
As part of the deal, there was a conditional pick included. The conditional second-round pick that was sent to Winnipeg would become a first-round pick if: 1) If the Rangers won two playoff series; and 2) Andrew Copp played in fifty percent of those games.
The New York Rangers beat the Carolina Hurricanes in game seven and the Winnipeg Jets will now receive the Rangers’ first-round draft selection
The former Jets 2013 fourth-round selection, Copp played a major role in New York’s 6-2 game seven win.
Copp played 20:16 in the win and had a goal, one assist, and a plus-one plus/minus in the victory. Copp also played an important role on the Rangers’ penalty kill and shutting down the Hurricanes’ powerplay.
The pending unrestricted free agent has had a terrific postseason. Copp has amassed six goals, six assists, and a plus-two rating in 14 games.
Since the Rangers are among the final four teams remaining, the pick the Jets will acquire from the Rangers will be between 29-32. It all depends on how much further the Rangers advance during the remainder of the postseason.
This will be the first time since the 2016 draft that the Jets will have two first-round selections. The Jets also have the fourteenth overall selection in the upcoming draft.

Looking ahead to the 2022 draft, the Jets have six selections with the option for a seventh. That seventh pick is another conditional selection that the Jets also acquired in the Copp trade. The Jets have the option to either take the St. Louis Blues 2022 second-round pick or the Rangers 2023 second-round pick.
